After an eight-year reign, The Witcher 3’s Blood and Wine DLC is no longer the highest-rated expansion in history, dethroned by the brilliant Elden Ring.
Instead of being upset that Blood and Wine is no longer the highest rated DLC in history, The Witcher 3 and CD Projekt RED are paying a nice tribute to the Elden Ring DLC, which is finally available today and that everyone seems to agree with.
The Witcher 3 Blood and Wine appears in the Elden Ring DLC
Blood and Wine was released in 2016 and made a masterful impression on players and critics alike. CD Projekt RED was at the peak of its powers at the time, after the true masterpiece The Witcher 3, released just a year earlier. It was more than an expansion, it was almost a whole new game with a colossal lifespan, a thrilling story and a truly enchanting region of Toussaint.
For eight years, no other DLC has managed to come close to it. But that changed when the ratings for Shadow of the World Tree, the Elden Ring expansion, dropped on June 18. With an average of 95 on Metacritic, compared to 92 for Blood and Wine, it is now the one that takes the throne of the highest rated expansion in history. Big fans of FromSoftware’s GOTY 2022 masterpiece, the developers of The Witcher 3, GOTY 2015, wanted to pay a beautiful tribute to it through the game’s official X.com account. We see an excellent illustration of Geralt from Riv, after defeating Mohg, the Blood Lord, in front of the portal that leads to the Realm of Darkness, the new area of the Elden Ring DLC.
Given the critical success of Shadow of the World Tree, it’s unlikely that another DLC will usurp its newfound throne anytime soon. Will we see The Witcher 4 expansion in eight years?
