The Witcher 3 is getting a next-gen upgrade, but does it need one?

nextgen, upgrade, Witcher

^Stay tuned after the ad for our wrap-up of the CD Projekt RED livestream and our take on why The Witcher 3 deserves a next-gen upgrade.

The Legendary Next-Gen Upgrade The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt It was announced back when we first got our hands on the new console, so it’s been a long time coming. It’s no surprise that it took this long, though, as the company found itself embroiled in controversy following the release of Cyberpunk 2077, which was of such poor quality on consoles that Sony infamously moved it to Removed from PS4.

Well, after months of regular updates and DLC announcements, Cyberpunk 2077’s redemption arc is in full swing, and CD Projekt RED seems determined to win back all the goodwill they originally earned with their most famous and arguably best game.

The next-gen update includes the weird Nilfgaardian armor from the first season of the Netflix show, which everyone hated because it wasn’t the same as the one in the game. If regular intercourse doesn’t work for you, it looks like the kind of thing you end up wearing.

The free update will arrive on December 14th and, in addition to visual upgrades like ray tracing and high-res textures, will include a suite of QoL enhancements, including the ability to cast different emblems on the fly without using the radial menu, quests, and Netflix series-related projects, haptic feedback for PS5 users, full localization for the Chinese market, and 60fps support for Xbox Series S. Oh, and there are even some missions being fixed.

CD Projekt RED may have just released a base performance unlock for the new machine: a lot of other studios have taken this approach, which is much better than nothing. After all, even smaller updates take time and resources to roll out, require testing and certification, and many developers simply can’t justify their spending, especially when they’re deep in development on their next big title. The fact that we’re getting substantial upgrades with new content, in-depth gameplay tweaks, and legacy bug fixes is pretty amazing.

Other studios have charged real money for less important upgrades, and they have every right to do so. What a lovely Christmas treat for The Witcher fans.
