This was not to be expected now. The game, codenamed Canis Majoris, is not a new production but a remake of the first part of the Witcher saga.
CD Projekt RED has officially announced a remake of The Witcher. It is said to be a complete reinterpretation of the game based on Unreal Engine 5 – the game is therefore being developed from scratch. This allows the developers to check and refine the toolset that is to be used for the development of the first part of the all-new Witcher trilogy.
However, the development is not taking place at CD Projekt RED, but is being produced by the partner studio Fool’s Theory and is said to be at an early stage. At Fool’s Theory, however, there are some employees who have already gained a lot of experience with the series through The Witcher 2 and 3. CDPR will also provide creative oversight for the project.
When and for which platforms the remake of The Witcher should appear is not yet mentioned in the announcement. It will probably also take some time before CDPR makes more concrete statements about the details.
“The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD Projekt RED. It was the first game we ever made – and it was a big moment for us back then. Going back to that place and redeveloping the game with that for the next generation of gamers to experience feels just as big, if not bigger,” said Adam Badowski, CD Projekt RED’s Head of Studio. “Working with Fool’s Theory on this project is equally exciting as some of the people there have been involved with The Witcher games. They know the source material well, they know how excited players have been for the remake, and they know how to make incredible and ambitious games. And while it will be some time before we can reveal more about and from the game, I know it will be worth the wait.”
A fitting day for the announcement, by the way, because The Witcher was released on October 26, 2007, exactly 15 years ago. As a reminder of what the game used to look like, here is one of the old trailers:
