The third season of Netflix’s “The Witcher” is getting a big push on social media to entice people to watch the hottest new batch of episodes. In doing so, however, rising star Liam Hemsworth appears to be giving way to Henry Cavill.
Just look at recent posts from the show’s official Twitter account to see a collage of real-world marketing centered on Cavill. The ads, a light show showing The Witcher promotion next to famous landmarks, suggest that Henry Cavill is still present in the latest season.
“Yes, he’s still Geralt in Season 3” really caught the world’s attention. This speaks volumes for the special status the show currently occupies. Henry Cavill is well-loved, and in the role of Geralt, he faithfully reprises the role and has gained on-screen popularity over the past few years. He is, quite literally, at the heart of the show’s appeal, along with co-stars Anya Chalotra, Freya Allen, and Joey Beatty.
However, the reality is that Cavill is no longer at the heart of the show. After his departure at the end of 2022, he spent a lot of energy trying to appease fans and hype Liam Hemsworth. But at this point, with the first part of the show’s third season underway, you have to assume that more effort should have been spent politely phasing him out.
Just look at the comments on the aforementioned post to see the confusion and frustration of the situation. “The fact that they have to remind people he’s still watching so they’ll tune in definitely says where this series is going,” Twitter user Gregson Arsenal wrote. “Next What will they do this season?” Many commentators felt the same way, mourning the loss of an act or who they saw as Geralt.
Whether his eventual absence from the show will have a negative or positive impact remains to be seen, as episodes continue to roll out in the coming weeks. Either way, let’s hope Hemsworth gets more love once he takes the spotlight in his new role.
