The second season of “The Witcher” is always about the so-called conjunction of the spheres. But what does that actually mean? Netzwelt provides the explanation.

  • In the prehistory of “The Witcher” the conjunction of the spheres brought the worlds of humans, monsters, elves and other beings together.
  • Since then there have been terrible, dangerous monsters in the world who fight witches like Geralt of Rivia.
  • In the 2nd season of “The Witcher” Geralt and the magician Istredd develop a new theory of the conjunction of spheres. Read these at the end of the article.

The Netflix series “The Witcher” takes place on a land mass called “the continent”. People, elves, dwarves, gnomes, halflings and monsters live there together. It was not always like that. These worlds only came together through the so-called “conjunction of the spheres”. How can that be?

In “The Witcher” cosmos there are not only the reality in which Geralt von Riva and Co. live, but also other spheres, parallel worlds and connected dimensions. You can think of it like parallel universes. Characters with strong magical powers can even jump back and forth between worlds – as Ciri does in the season 2 finale when she encounters the wild hunt that does not come from this world.

But back to Conjunction of the spheres. Around 1200 years ago, the previously separate worlds of humans, elves, monsters, etc. came together. The universes collided and suddenly there were monsters in the world, for example. In response to this and saving people, mages created the first sorcerers.

By the way, this is the story of the upcoming “The Witcher” spin-off “Blood Origin”. A first trailer for the upcoming offshoot on Netflix has recently been published.

The conjunction of the spheres: Racism and life-threatening monsters

The conjunction of the spheres has now basically had two effects. Humans, elves and other rational beings have to share a world.

The second season of “The Witcher” shows the ubiquitous racism from which all non-human races suffer. For example, elves live much, much longer than humans, but they do people multiply faster.

Elves are therefore being displaced by humans in mountainous regions and remote areas. People grab the best parts of the world. For example, Season 2 reveals that Ciri’s homeland, Cintra, was formerly inhabited by elves who called the area Xin’trea.

The second effect of the conjunction of spheres: There are dangerous monsters in the world. The mutated sorcerers equipped with superhuman powers and senses like Geralt are there to fight these very beings.

Who came first

In the second season of “The Witcher” the elves claim that they are the original inhabitants of the continent. That may well be true. The humans would then be invaders of the elven world.

However, “The Witcher” takes place in a medieval fantasy world. There are therefore no precise records of the conjunction of the spheres. That is why the magician Istredd also works as an archaeologist. He wants to find out more about the conjunction of the spheres and the past of the continent.

To repel human invasion, the elves also created a warrior: Lara Dorren. The “elder blood” flowed in her veins and she is an ancestor of Ciris who “inherited” her mighty blood. But Lara fell in love with a human magician and the elves’ plan failed.

News about the conjunction of the spheres from season 2 of “The Witcher”

In the 2nd season of “The Witcher” Geralt and magician Istredd develop a kind new theory on the conjunction of the spheres. In Cintra, they investigate the trench that Ciri created with a powerful magical scream in season 1.

Ciri used magic to collapse a huge monolith there. Geralt and Istredd now suspect that the sphere conjunction did not actually collide different worlds.

Rather, the monoliths are more like a kind of antenna or receiver. The monsters can come from their world into the world of the continent. You then enter the continent at the site of the monoliths.

This is exactly what happens in the trench in front of Cintra – and later in Kаer Morhen, the fortress of the witchers. Here Ciri is obsessed with the Immortal Mother. With a magical scream she splits the big tree that stands in the hall of Kаer Morhen.

To the great surprise of Geralt, Vesemir and Co., there is also a monolith hidden inside the tree. Through this, too, terrible monsters enter the hall of Kаer Morhen – and force the wizards of the wolf school into a hard, costly fight.

The second season of “The Witcher” opens up a new perspective on the conjunction of the spheres. By no means are all the monsters on the continent. Instead it is now clear that in principle an infinite number of monsters can follow from their dimension! An inexhaustible reservoir of death.
