On December 6, 2022, the building game Dwarf Fortress was released with a rocket launch on Steam – okay, the classic released in 2006 is of course not that new, but for the first time it has a real interface. The developers Bay 12 Games do not want to leave it at that and are already planning far into the future. A particularly large focus is on myths and creativity.

Already, there are players who only play Dwarf Fortress for the simulated story. They use the procedural system to generate hundreds upon thousands of years of history, which is then explored and consumed in lieu of actual gameplay. how PC Gamer reports, the developers want to start there and continue working. What is meant by this is a new magic and myth system.

What new content are planned?

Procedurally generated myths: The developers want to work on procedurally generated myths that affect every subsequent event. Developer Tarn Addams gives a concrete example of this: If the myth was generated that two worlds face each other in the great void, then this affects the entire magic system in the game or in this generated world.








Creative Mode: The developers also plan to provide tools that allow players to create and modify worlds and myths themselves. As an example they mention the difference between Survival and Creative Mode in Minecraft. Dwarf Fortress thus moves away from the survival focus and directs future development towards creative work.

New gods: You play god by creating new gods. This also includes their personality. This creates endless possibilities: How about a world in Dwarf Fortress under the Greek gods from Hades, for example? Or how about a world with Ronald McDonald as the crown of creation, on whose red nose the entire magic system is based?

Weltenbau: You should also be able to create the worlds yourself. This includes both the horizontal and vertical structure as well as the appearance of individual elements. The possibilities are therefore almost unlimited in theory.

When is the new content coming?

As of this writing, the developers have not yet started programming. According to his own statement, however, there is a huge pile of notes that have accumulated over the last two decades. Procedural myths and a world editor are probably still there a few years away from us.
