Elex 2 has just been announced – by us. In our big cover story for Elex 2 you will find out everything there is to know about Piranha Bytes’ new open world role-playing game. Except for the release date, because that is currently causing confusion. And that was in turn fueled by the fact that Steam originally noted 2021 as the release year. But not anymore. So let’s unravel it.
What did Piranha Bytes tell us?
In an hour and a half conversation with us, Piranha Bytes and publisher THQ avoided a specific release date. They didn’t even want to name the year. For us that means: 2021 is anything but secure. However, you can use some general information to make a forecast:
- Elex 2 is also available for last-gen consoles, which definitely speaks against a release beyond 2022. In 2023 or 2024 it would simply no longer make sense to develop for the old consoles.
- Elex 2 already makes a fairly advanced impression. There were two years between the first preview of Elex 1 and the final release, this time the period should be shorter. This will make it very likely in mid-2022.
What was on Steam?
Although Piranha Bytes didn’t want to tell us a release date, things looked different on Steam after the reveal. There was 2021 as the release year. However, this information was corrected shortly afterwards, now you only find a vague “Coming Soon” there. We made this visible with modern image processing:
What do we do with it now?
At least one thing can be deduced from this confusion: Piranha Bytes and THQ Nordic are aiming for a release sometime between 2021 and 2022. The current year is probably the optimistic release date, which with a lot of luck could work. Alternatively, you have to be patient until spring or summer 2022. The pre-order phase of Elex 2 has not started yet, you can only add the game to your wish list on Steam.
