Do you miss Star Wars in the cinema? Then mark May 21, 2026 in your calendar. On this date, the first Star Wars film since Episode 9 will be released on the big screen: The Mandalorian & Grogu.

Start of filming for the next Star Wars film

In order to meet the target date, filming is set to begin very soon. At least that is what the usually very well-informed website MakingStarWarsAccording to their reports, a few scenes have already been shot, but things are only really getting started im August 2024 los.

Originally, filming was supposed to start in June, but it was apparently delayed for unknown reasons. However, the delay of a few weeks is probably no cause for concern for now. Because if The Mandalorian & Grogu really does get going in August 2024, nothing should stand in the way of the theatrical release in 2026.

What else you should know about the Mando movie

The Mandalorian & Grogu will be filmed in El Segundo, California, among other places. Jon Favreau (Iron Man, The Lion King), who is working on the film together with the new Lucasfilm CCO Dave Filoni.

Concrete details about the plot or cast are currently not known. At least there is now an update on filming, and more information is likely to follow in the coming weeks and months. With a reported budget of 100 to 120 million US dollars, The Mandalorian & Grogu could be cheaper than previous Star Wars films.

At the moment it is not 100 percent clear whether the Mando movie will replace a potential fourth season of The Mandalorian. Disney and Lucasfilm have not yet made a clear statement on this matter.

At least Giancarlo Esposito does not completely rule out that The Mandalorian will also continue with Season 4. At the Fan Expo Knoxville (via Mando3Updates), the actor who plays Moff Gideon admits that he doesn’t know much about the behind-the-scenes discussions, but there has at least been talk about new Mando episodes for Disney Plus.

At least one thing is officially confirmed at the moment: The Mandalorian & Grogu will be in theaters on May 21, 2026. The next Star Wars film is scheduled to follow on December 18, 2026. Possibly Daisy Ridley’s solo film as Rey or James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi. That remains to be seen.
