Back in January, Bloomberg journalist Takashi Mochizuki claimed that Nintendo would provide a very large number of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles at launch. This, according to Mochizuki, would limit both availability issues and problems with scalpers.
Good to know: Scalping is the process of buying a product for resale. This promises profits, especially for products with supply shortages, but also deprives genuine buyers of the opportunity to buy a product at the regular price.
Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft were all particularly affected by supply shortages during the pandemic. Scalpers took advantage of the situation to sell consoles, games and accessories at a higher price on marketplaces such as eBay.
At Nintendo, limited editions of the console and controller, as well as special editions of games, were particularly affected.
Nintendo CEO Shuntaro Furukawa addressed the issue at the recent shareholders meeting taken up.
These are the most important points:
- Nintendo is no longer affected by supply shortages.
- The Nintendo Switch 2 console will be available in sufficient quantities to meet demand.
- Nintendo reserves the right to take further measures to ensure availability.
What exactly further measures might look like was not explained during the conference.
In Japan, some retailers have taken action of their own. For example, the Japanese retail chain Nojima Denki has written the names of buyers on the Playstation 5 packaging and Controller box destroyed
Nintendo Switch 2: Probably not until spring 2025
So far, Nintendo has only confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be released this fiscal year. The fiscal year ends on March 31, 2025.
Several sources have unanimously reported that Nintendo has postponed the release date of the Switch 2 to 2025. The console is likely to launch in March 2025.
