Video game adaptations to the big screen are almost like a box of chocolates: until they are released you never know what you’re going to get. Sometimes we come across films so bad that they disappoint before their release, mind you, but there have also been cases where viewers and players have disagreed with the result. Is it possible to find a middle ground? Eli Roththe director of the Borderlands movie, seems to have found a way.
On the eve of the premiere, Roth shared A really interesting ten-minute making of: Instead of offering us footage embellished with statements from the actors and producers sitting in a chair, we are shown the filming process and the tricks to make the action scenes and setting feel genuine, trying to please both those who come from the Gearbox saga and those who want pure, plain popcorn action.
And mind you, it is about a 360º video formatso you can rotate the image freely by moving your mouse or finger over the image depending on the device you are viewing it on.
This behind-the-scenes look is also a gem for those who are genuinely curious to see how action movies are shot, how scenes are prepared, or to see how many specialists and personnel are present in the production of each scene and yet disappear when it comes time to edit it.
The real draw of the whole thing, though, is seeing both the great action scenes and, of course, the way the Borderlands universe moves from its signature graphics to a stellar cast of real-life actors led by none other than Cate Blanchett
The movie of Borderlands It’s coming out at a curious time: the saga and Gearbox itself have changed hands, going from Embracer Group to Take Two. In addition, we have to take into account the slipstream that comes with facing Deadpool and Wolverine in the box office and the bar set by live action productions like Fallout or The Last of Us.
That said, the director already has plans for a hypothetical sequel, stating that they have enough content for another one. Our reading of the latter is that both he and his stars and co-stars had a good time making it, but, logically, in the end it remains to be seen how it performs at the box office.
Borderlands It shows promise from its own making of, but the real test for video game fans as well as movie buffs and action movie fans will be On August 9. The date when siren Lillith and the rest of her crazy gang will enter movie theaters armed to the teeth to conquer the summer box office… or they will fail in the attempt. On the positive side: in these 10 minutes of filming there is already more action and fan service than in entire movies based on video games.
