News culture “These are modern myths” Mad Max director Furiosa is fascinated by superheroes for a very specific reason
“Mad Max Furiosa” has been available in cinemas since May 22nd. Following this release, the film’s director, George Miller, spoke for several minutes into Josh Horowitz’s microphone. When asked about his aborted project Justice League: Mortal, he explained why he is fascinated by superheroes.
George Miller, director of Mad Max Furiosa, admits
Every art has its own communities and it is clear that cinema is no exception to the rule. For several years, fans of the seventh art have been wrestling with the question: are superhero films, which are becoming increasingly popular with the rise of the Marvel Cinematographic Universe (or MCU), real cinema? A highly charged debate in which we will not personally participate, but in which it is worth participating.
Recently headlined in cinemas with Mad Max FuriosaGeorge Miller sat down for 45 minutes with reporter Josh Horowitz. The latter for his podcast Happy, sad, confused interviewed the director on various topics. For example, he returned to a black and white version of Mad Max Furiosa ; of the casting process for the film, but also addressed questions that had less to do with its production. For example, he is interviewed about the topic of superheroes in the cinema.
“It is the progression of stories over time”
An area that has interested George Miller since he almost made a film in this genre in the late 2000s Justice League: MortalsThe film was about technology to end the reign of superheroes. However, DC already had successful projects at that time with the first two Batman films directed by Nolan. Since the latter did not want two different Batmans to coexist, Warner Bros. decided to cancel the project (especially since Nolan’s productions were successful).
This Justice League film will therefore not see the light of day, but that does not mean that George Miller sees his interest in superheroes waning. On the other hand. In his interview with Josh Horowitz, he suggests that his curiosity pushes him to imagine how stories are told, but also why we tell them. He quickly returns to his Australian origins and the legends told there. In his speech, we understand that the myths that are then exchanged orally – whatever they may be – are experiences that are shared. And that contemporary superhero films are, in a way, modern myths.
Cinema is here to stay because we need that shared experience in one way or another (…) They (superhero films) are completely recycled, reworked and reinterpreted according to the times. They basically have a new meaning. It’s the progression of stories over time. That’s one thing that amazes me and that’s why I’m attracted to them.
We should not be surprised, therefore, if George Miller, after directing the launch of Mad Max Furiosa, announces (or not) that he is the director of a superhero film.
