LG relies on an old-fashioned update strategy for its own televisions. That should change in 2024. This should make LG’s webOS operating system competitive again.

In contrast to many other TV manufacturers, LG has a rather unusual approach to updates for its own TV operating system webOS. With each new generation of televisions, LG introduces a new webOS version with new functions, which is then tied to this generation. There are no corresponding updates for older generations, only small firmware updates at most.
The problem: As soon as a new generation of LG televisions comes onto the market, you will have to make do with an outdated webOS version on your old model. But that should now change in 2024, as LG is doing in one Press release about new QNED televisions almost casually. Accordingly, the update strategy in the future will probably be based more on competitors such as Samsung or Sony.
As part of the “webOS Re:New Program”, LG will offer upgrades to the latest version of webOS for QNED televisions from 2024. Including the year of release, the models will then be provided with new webOS versions for up to five years. The “webOS Re:New program” also includes LG QNED Mini LED 8K models released in 2022 (QNED99 and QNED95 series) and will also be delivered for models in the QNED TV series in the future.
LG webOS: Update change probably not without reason
LG is probably not just making this change in strategy for the sake of buyers. As is the case with other TV operating systems, webOS is of course intended to be an advertising platform for LG. It goes without saying that advertising partners are of course more satisfied if the advertisements are not only present on the latest generation of LG televisions, but also on older models.
Nevertheless, this long-overdue update change is a big plus for owners of LG televisions and webOS in general. This makes the TV operating system significantly more competitive and catches up with current market leaders such as Samsung’s Tizen.
