A second breakthrough for Percy
It’s official! Percy Jackson returns for a second season! For those who weren’t listening at the back of the class, Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a television adaptation of Rick Riordan’s teen fantasy novels that began in 2006.
The story follows the adventures of Percy Jackson, a 12-year-old boy who discovers that he is actually a demigod, son of Poseidon. Falsely accused of stealing Zeus’s lightning bolt, Percy embarks on an epic journey across the United States. Accompanied by his friends Annabeth and Grover, he must face mythological monsters, Olympian gods and many other dangers to restore peace between the gods.
Remember that the franchise had already attempted a first breakthrough on the big screen in 2010 with Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief and a sequel to Sea of Monsters‘, two films that did not have the expected success, especially for the author of the books.
Rick Riordan called these first two adjustments in 2020 a “waste” in tweets that have now been deleted.
“After the film experience, I pretty much left Hollywood aside for a long, long time, I really didn’t want to have anything to do with the film industry anymore. For many years I said to myself, ‘I don’t want to commit. I don’t want to think about other adaptations. I’m done.’ But when it became clear that something was going to happen with me or without me (for the Disney+ series), I had a long discussion with Becky, my wife. We said, ‘If something were to happen, it’s probably best to try again.'” Rick Riordan, 2023 – Variety
“I can’t wait to bring the next season of Percy Jackson #DisneyPlus! Weigh anchor. Hoist mainsail. All hands on deck, demigods. We’re heading for the sea of monsters!”

Given the success of the first season, the author actually seems to have come to terms with the adaptations!
What can we expect from season 2?
At the moment, no official date has been announced. We only know that Disney has confirmed it for 2025. As for the plot, we know that the first season will retrace the story of the first book: The Lightning Thief. Logically, we follow the sequel told in volume 2: The Sea of Monsters. In addition, here is Disney’s official synopsis for D23:
“In the new season, Percy Jackson returns to Camp Half-Blood a year later to find his world turned upside down. His friendship with Annabeth changes, he learns he has a cyclops brother, Grover has disappeared, and the camp is under siege by Kronos’ troops. Percy’s journey to set things right will take him off the map and into the deadly sea of monsters, where a secret destiny awaits the son of Poseidon. “
According to ScreenRant, Rick Riordan wants to have a total of 5 seasons to cover all the books, with a rhythm of 1 book = 1 season. There is no further information at the moment as filming for this second season has only just begun. We should have more information by the end of the year.
Please note that the first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is available in its entirety on the SVOD platform Disney+.
