News culture This film adapts one of the most important wars of the 20th century… between two lemonades: Steven Spielberg is involved!
In the 1990s, two soda brands struggled with heavy advertising. This fight will involve the famous director Steven Spielberg and another well-known name in cinema.
Are you more of a Cola or Pepsi person? This is the question that can divide a group of people in a split second. The war between the two soda giants will result in a film produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Judd Apatow: Cola Wars. It tells the true story of Pepsi’s attempt to end Coca-Cola’s century-old reign as the best cola brand in the world. The feature film highlights the “Cola Wars” of the mid-1980s and particularly talks about Michael Jackson’s famous commercial with his track Billie Jean, which was remixed in Pepsi Generation.

Big names
Cola Wars is being developed by Sony, which purchased the project for over $1 million. Judd Apatow was chosen to direct the film. He is notably the mind behind the films 40 Years Old, Still a Virgin (2005), 40 Years: Instructions for Use (2012) and Knocked Up, Instructions for Use (2007). We can therefore assume that Cola Wars will contain some passages of comedy and humor. At his side we find the famous producer and director Steven Spielberg, best known for Jurassic Park (1993), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and Schindler’s List (1993).
The script is still being written. At the helm is a duo consisting of Jason Shuman and Ben Queen. The first co-wrote the series Acapulco (2021) and directed an independent film To Leslie (2022). Queen is best known to the general public for her work in the films Cars 2 (2011) and Cars 3 (2017). He will also be present at the production of the film The Addams Family 2 (2021).
Not the first biopic
It is not the first time that cinema has taken an interest in the stories of major American brands. There’s “The Social Network” (2010), directed by David Fincher, which traces the creation of Facebook via its founder Mark Zuckerberg. We can also quote The Founder (2016) by John Lee Hancock, which tells us about the history of McDonald’s. On Prime Video we were even able to watch Air (2023), directed by Ben Affleck, which is about the connection between Michael Jordan and the Nike brand.
