At the beginning of the year, science fiction dominates the international box office. In the first quarter of 2024, science fiction fans were able to enjoy (or not) Godzilla Minus One, Dune 2 and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire on the big screen, before soon discovering Civil War, Mad Max: Furiosa and much more. belongs to Planet of the Apes: The New Kingdom. A 61 year old SF saga
The science fiction genre can boast of having extraordinary representatives of all film eras. Star Wars, Mad Max, Star Trek… these franchises have stood the test of time. Below, There is one that has delighted film fans and science fiction fans for over six decades, 61 years to be exact. The novel Planet of the Apes emerged from fertile imagination and was put to paper in 1963 by French author Pierre Boulle. Given the success of the literary work, it was made into a film by Franklin Schaffner five years later.
“Planet of the Apes” (1968) was such a critical and commercial success that four sequels were shown in theaters between 1970 and 1973 (“The Secret of the Planet of the Apes,” “Escape from the Planet of the Apes,” “Conquest of the Planet”) of the Apes, Battle for the Planet of the Apes). Almost 30 years later Tim Burton starts a reboot of the saga, but it doesn’t find an audience.
In 2011, Planet of the Apes entered a new era with Origins, with Rupert Wyatt behind the camera and James Franco at the helm. Then Matt Reeves (who would go on to work on The Batman) took over the trilogy in 2014 and 2017 with The Showdown and then Supremacy. Now it’s the turn of Wes Ball, who directed the “Labyrinth” trilogy. The Planet of the Apes clans will take power in 2024.
An IMAX trailer starring Freya Allan
On April 2, 2024, 20th Century Studios uploaded a brand new IMAX trailer for Planet of the Apes to their YouTube channel (see above). After a short introduction, This trailer features the strangest thing: a new, uncut 90-second sequence in which a young person, played by actress Freya Allan (Ciri in the Netflix series The Witcher), is pursued by the forces of Proximus Caesar.
Several generations after Caesar’s reign and death, the apes established a thriving society. But outside, a group of people have survived the virus and returned to the wild. As a tyrant perverts the teachings of “Moses” about the ape people, young Noah must flee to remain free. Along the way, he meets a human woman who could be the key to determining the fate of both species.
