Backtracking. Almost a year ago, the American channel Adult Swim released the trailer for the anime Spiral on its YouTube account. This anime, produced by Production IG USA, remains particularly faithful to the mangaka’s work, both in the characteristics of the characters and in this particularly successful black and white style.

A masterpiece of horror
This emerges from an interview with Junji Ito The Japan Times that today we learn that the adaptation of Spiral is on track. According to this interview, it is announced that the anime will be broadcast in the US by the end of the year. Junji Ito states that the first four episodes are already finished and that they are “lives up to its expectations“.
Spiral is certainly Junji Ito’s most famous work. Published in Japan between 1998 and 1999, the manga arrived in France in 2002 before benefiting from a reissue in 2021. In France, this reissue was directed by Delcourt/Tonkam, as was the entire work of Mangetsu, which brings together the author’s works for several years, and has certainly allowed the mangaka to experience a real resurgence in popularity. Also last year, the author was celebrated at the Angoulême International Comics Festival with an exhibition and a conference looking back on his career.
But this recognition is also international. Netflix and Crunchyroll have understood the growing interest of readers in the mangaka universe and have decided to adapt several of his texts into anime with Maniac by Junji Ito and the Junji Ito Collection, two anime anthologies available respectively on both streaming platforms. At the moment we do not know who will regain the broadcast rights to Spirale. But one thing is certain: this meeting is not to be missed.
