This horror film starring Henry Cavill earned a terrible 0% average on Rotten Tomatoes. And there's good news (or not): It's coming soon to Amazon's Prime Video streaming service.
Henry Cavill's biggest failure
You know him for his key role in The Witcher saga or for his sensual character in the Tudors series, but Henry Cavill previously starred in a less than memorable turnip. Total 110,713 views, Hellraiser: Hellworld is unanimously hailed as the star's greatest cinematic failure. This eighth work in the horror series, released in 2005, left a bitter taste in the mouths of both critics and audiences. Although this experience was a real nightmare for the actor, fortunately it did not affect his career as very few people remember it. He recently returned to the cinema in a completely different role For Argya spy thriller in which he plays a secret agent alongside pop star Dua Lipa.
The film gets a terrible 0% average on Rotten Tomatoes. It suffers from bland writing that fails to innovate the codes of the franchise, unconvincing special effects and lackluster direction. Note that audiences are more generous, giving it an average rating of 22% on Rotten Tomatoes and a rating of 1.3/5 on AlloCiné.
And what is it actually about? Players playing an MMORPG based on the Hellraiser series find their lives in danger after being invited to a rave whose host wants to show them the truth behind the myth of the Cenobites (Allociné summary). Good or bad news: The feature film will be available on Amazon's streaming platform Prime Video on December 1st.
A recently rebooted saga
The first film dates back to 1987 and spawned numerous sequels, nine to be exact, most of which never achieved much critical success. The saga was recently rebooted on Hulu with Jamie Clayton in the role of Pinhead. David Bruckner (The Ritual, The Prey of a Shadow) takes on the franchise here by suggesting the following scenario: “A young woman encounters supernatural forces connected to a puzzle box called the Wailing Pattern that are responsible for her brother's disappearance. These beings, called Cenobites, are led by Pinhead“. Given the average press support of 67%, this proposal is far from unanimous collected on Rotten Tomatoes, the critics still agree on a rather positive consensus: “David Bruckner's Hellraiser is a gift to fans who have suffered after many mediocre sequels and opens the puzzle box to get this franchise back on the right track.”
