Darth Vader is arguably one of the most famous screen villains ever. Without the antagonist of film hero Luke Skywalker with his iconic black mask, Star Wars would not be what it is today – a unique piece of pop culture.
Perhaps even more iconic than his looks, however, is the Sith Lord’s voice. The heavy, punctuated breathing and the piercingly deep sound have dug themselves into the collective memory of the present. Luke I am your father
No, I’m your fathercalled.
Series review of Star Wars: Andor
Andor is unlike anything we’ve seen before
Even the Europe voice actors are remarkable, although they have been changed several times. In the English original, actor James Earl Jones lends his voice to Darth Vader. Starting at Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope
in 1977 through to the series Obi-Wan Kenobi
you can hear the now 91-year-old American in the original sound.
James Earl Jones only lent his voice to Darth Vader. In the original film trilogy, he was played by Brit David Prowse, who passed away in late 2020.
AI algorithm instead of real human voice
In the future, however, it will no longer be Jones himself who speaks the dark text passages. Instead, an AI algorithm is used. By the way, he already does it in Obi-Wan Kenobi
his work and makes Vader sound like he did 45 years ago, like the magazine Vanity Fair reported.
What is this algorithm? The Kiev start-up Respeecher is behind the speech AI. Using numerous audio recordings from the first films, the algorithm was trained to imitate Jones and Vader. Apparently, this works so well that the actor gave his approval without hesitation. And Lucasfilm is also enthusiastic:
We hired Respeecher because the voice performances the startup creates have an often incredibly human touch.

So the voice of Darth Vader will remain with us for eternity. And with it the memory of James Earl Jones, whose name will forever be linked to the dark Sith Lord. The following article shows that AI can also achieve incredible things in other areas:
How do you like that? Are you excited that Darth Vader will always have the same distinctive voice? Or do you find that unnatural and bother you? Write it to us in the comments!
