How can the next electricity bill be minimized as much as possible? If you are also wondering about the rising energy costs, we have tips for you – for the gaming PC, but also beyond that.
In the tech podcast, Micha therefore speaks to Nils Raettig, who recently measured the power consumption of many devices when they are idle, and to Dennis Ziesecke, who managed to reduce the power consumption of his PC by up to 80 percent when he was not doing anything.
Dennis has also recently started using a small solar power plant on the roof of his garage, which is already saving his family 180 to 200 dollars in electricity costs per year – and the trend is rising.
In the podcast, Dennis reports how he installed the solar cells, how much it cost, what rules the grid operators set for this and what bureaucratic hurdles you have to consider in Europey. You can also read more about this in Dennis’ article about the solar power plant at GameStar Tech.
He and Nils also talk about how to save electricity on the PC. For example, the color of your RGB lighting and the brightness of your screen can have a noticeable impact on power consumption.

If you don’t shy away from a little “trial and error”, you can also consider undervolting – i.e. looking for the ideal maximum clock for the graphics card and at the same time minimizing the applied voltage. Little or no performance is lost in the process, as colleague Alex also describes in his undervolting article.
We also discuss the differences between sleep and hibernate modes, and whether it’s worth turning off a PC completely every time you need it multiple times a day (say, for office work). Spoiler: You’ll need a calculator to answer that.
Finally, we have a few general tips for saving electricity that aren’t rocket science – and yet Micha was amazed because he just hadn’t thought of it.
By the way, you can read more about Dennis not only at GameStar Tech, but also on his virtual reality page VR-Legion.de.
