This is an initiative in collaboration with Wizards of the Coast.
Four hours ago I went down to my office after dinner with the intention of writing. The plan was clear, open Magic Arena, copy the list of letters included in the small to be able to share it with you, structure well how to use it to win with a little guide, and run to bed to scratch the more hours of sleep the better.
I never got to step two.
Well, actually yes, but it was two hours after opening the game and after that, I don’t know how, magically another two hours have passed between the previous paragraph and this one. How quickly time flies when you’re painting the face of another weary with deck of cards of zombies leaving -37 health on the last hit.
Getting the hang of Magic
It could be said that finally I got the hang of it a Magic: The Gathering. And not for finding out what the hell is going on and – less and less – stop making stupid mistakes that cost me games. No, I say it because I have finally learned to follow my instincts and, to the more than probable surprise of Rubén from the past of these Magic Chronicles, my instinct is no longer a lycanthrope milestone.
For the first time in my history with trading card games I have the feeling of perfectly understanding the strategy behind each mechanic. There are dozens of them and I assure you that I should not know even half of the complete collection, but those that currently enter the qualifying standard goal are already burned into my head.
He had never been able to pick up someone’s mallet and finish a version that works better for me. And when I say never is not talking for the sake of talking, it is never ever. Where do you go to fiddle with something that is not yours? How are you going to know more than that to play what you shouldn’t?
Be careful, I confirm that I do not know more than anyone else in this game, but where before any impulse that led me to experiment ended in a Greek tragedy starring clone decks that dominated the meta, in Magic it has become one more way to enjoy the game.
The satisfaction of modifying the deck (and getting it right)
Introduce what you just saw in a deck that has swept you, fiddle with the number of cards of each type that you have in the small To try to make it more agile, discard those cards that you don’t have and exchange them for others that, hey, they aren’t that bad either …
Going into this process almost always ended in frustration and the mere fact of enjoying it, with greater or lesser fortune, seemed like an impossible mission for me. The answer may be in a difference between the interest now and then, yes, but I think much of the fun is in the game itself.
It never ceases to amaze me that, despite having a pretty solid goal, the variety The number of decks I’m dealing with keeps growing, and the ease with which I can carve a niche there thanks to endless letters that I have at my disposal, even in standard, it is not far behind.
I doubt that my humble small I can do nothing against more experienced and studied decks at the highest levels, but with a handful of changes I have planted myself in diamond in just one afternoon and with a win ratio that has been impossible to get emboldened with.
My deck of dogs and cats
Excuse me, I’m not making you dizzy anymore. Those of you who have followed us on the adventures of elstream surely you will see some cards with which we have already played, but after several tweaks the jump of this Dogs and cats It has been tremendous. I leave you with the list of cards:
Dogs and cats
- 4x Sentinel of the Jaspers
- 4x Skirmish in the blizzard
- 2x Cariátide ilysea
- 2x Inscription of abundance
- 2x Class: Explorer
- 4x Leader of the werewolf pack
- 4x Province liberator
- 2x Augur of Autumn
- 2x Mammoth Also Wins
- 2x Troll of the Ancient Wilds
- 2x Esika’s carriage
- 2x Toski, Keeper of Secrets
- 4x Wrenn y Siete
- 2x Unnatural growth
- 18x Snowy forest
- 2x Anonymous refuge
- 2x Hydra lair
Next, we are going to see step by step what the strategy to follow should be and what you should expect from each card. It won’t take long to get the hang of it because the synergies between cards are a real joy and, in essence, it is simpler than the mechanism of a jug.
With a focus aggro -I have aired games in just four turns- and enough low-cost cards to try to keep the rival at bay, only the battles against decks with a lot of control and bad luck with the lands -It’s my fate, what are we going to do? managed to send me to the canvas.
How the deck is played
First hand
You should aim for a hand with two or more lands and a clear path for the next three turns. In the ideal case we would speak of a Hydra lair (a land that can turn into a bug with a strength and toughness equal to the mana you spend on it), a Forest, a Sentinel of the Jaspers (It gives us one mana when turning another creature), the Blizzard Melee that will allow us to stop from the beginning those decks of angels and zombies that are so fashionable lately, and some creatures of cost two and three of mana.
Strategy and victory condition
From here, the strategy is to enjoy the more lands and creatures on the table, the better, since we will need five of the first to be able to launch our star card, and only with a good table full of bugs will we be able to take advantage of it. I speak, of course, of Unnatural growth, which at the beginning of each combat doubles the strength and resistance of our creatures.
But since holding onto a single burning nail does not bode well, there are all the other cards to throw a cable filling our side of the Arena with powerful creatures. The transformation of the Hydra lair and the Anonymous refuge they can be key, but also cheap creatures for what they offer like the Troll of the Ancient Wilds (one of the best cards that have passed through my hands because of how versatile it is) or the Mammoth Also Wins.
The combination of permanent and expiration date buffs that offer both Skirmish in the blizzard What Inscription of abundance should serve to clear the table before a more dangerous strategy, such as the combination of the Esika’s carriage and Wrenn y Siete.
The first one will allow us to copy any creature token that is on the board, be it the 2/2 cats that the Carriage itself invokes, or those that we can create at cost -3 with Wrenn that will have a strength and resistance equivalent to the number of lands you control. Copy an 8/8 every turn. What more could you want? Oh yeah, when it comes time to fight everyone becomes a 16/16.
Let’s improve the deck together
From here on, surely the experts know a lot of strategies and cards that could come in handy to finish shaping the deck. Of course, do not take me away Augur of Autumn, which has become one of my favorite cards by letting me fiddle with the top card of the deck as if drawing three cards per turn.
Three 16/16 from one shift to another. How could I not be excited about this, if I couldn’t be enjoying this streak more. Anyway, I should go to bed now, so I’ll leave you and tomorrow I’ll read to you if it has worked well for you or if you have any ideas that could help us all. One more game and to sleep.
