There are games from which it is impossible to squeeze more juice. With so many users enjoying countless titles, it is difficult for a work like Tetris to have anything more to say. Especially if we talk about its version for NES.
However, if we add the world of speedrunning to the cocktail, all eyes turn to Alekséi Pázhitnov’s game. The community discovered a method to get more out of the game, a technique called rolling.
Basically, this way of playing consists of constantly tapping below the NES controller while pressing the directional buttons. Until now, the speedrunners of Tetris two methods were used: DAS or hypertapping.
The first of them is the conventional one, grabbing the controller normally and doing it without any frills. On the other hand, there is hypertapping, which must be done with very fast presses to the directional buttonswhich results in faster movement of the blocks on the screen.
Despite its obvious competitive advantages, It produces very fast fatigue in the fingers, in addition to which it can cause small injuries to the hand. Now, thanks to the beginnings of Cheez_Fish, rolling is starting to make its way into the community.
In November 2020, this Tetris player thought that if he kept tapping the back of the remote with his fingers, would increase the speed even more. Through practice, Cheez_Fish has mastered this new art and has set several records and won tournaments using rolling.
TegaMech, another player from Tetris, has modified rolling in a particular way. To further stabilize the NES Controller, place one part on the bottom of your foot, preventing it from rolling around too much.
As we say, these techniques, including hypertapping, require a lot of skill and patience to manage them and make them effective. A new horizon may open up for Tetris 35 years after its release.
