Disney is going to take superhero animation more seriously than ever: in addition to adding a third division to the great Marvel Studios dedicated to producing new series and films (Marvel Animation), it continues to expand its franchises in a big way through video games. And right between one thing and another, both being at the same time, the imminent Marvel Studios’ What If…? An Immersive Story. A video game that, by the way, comes exclusively to Apple Vision Pro
Produced from Industrial Light & Magic Through ILM Immersive, to whom we owe the Vader Immortal trilogy, the playable proposal is based on the premise of planting none other than Uatu, the Watcher, in our house or where we usually play and, through magical portals like those of Dr. Strange, take us directly to the multiverse to collect the infinity stones. A plan that, as you will see, is truly pretentious… And how does it play?
Marvel Studios’ What If…? An Immersive Story It combines both augmented reality and virtual reality within a narrative in which we will jump through the multiverse like Miles Morales or the Marvel heroes in the series What Would Happen If…?. However, we will not go in blindly and we will not have to be experts in Marvel superheroes, since the Watcher will act as a guide during the games.
From there, the premise takes the same aesthetics of the Disney Plus animated series and adds the functions of Apple Vision Pro to promote that we fight alongside variants of Marvel stars, in environments of the multiverse and, between a battle and the next, see completely original animated scenes created in stereoscopic 3D. The goal: for players to genuinely feel like they are inside an episode of What would happen if…?
The interesting thing is that, as we mentioned, part of the narrative combines elements of magic and the power of the infinity gems: as players we can cast spells in the style of Dr. Strange and, as we advance, apply the power of each of these cosmic wonders, being able to alter time, space or reality. Of course, beyond the viewer with the convenience of getting into all this mess without leaving our house and, if we wish, in our pajamas.
When you align the Marvel universes with Lucasfilm’s special effects department, you can’t look away. And although we do not know the percentage of narrative and activity that it proposes, we must recognize that it is a really sweet idea for fans of the House of Ideas within a Marvel Studios that, thanks to the mutants, is once again gaining momentum.
In any case, the launch of Marvel Studios’ What If…? An Immersive Story is scheduled for next May 30 on Apple Vision Pro, serving as both a prelude and an expansion for the third and final season of a What would happen if…? which still does not have a release date, but which has managed to widen the margins of the UCM much more successfully than other television projects.
