This is what the cult shooter from 1993 looks like with ray tracing

Cult, Ray, Shooter, Tracing

Ray tracing is only for modern games? Are you kidding me? Are you serious when you say that! A few oldies have already received a fresh cell treatment based on this technology and thus shine in new splendor – five dollars for it in the phrase pig!

After Kyle Katarn from Jedi Knight 2 was allowed to swing his lightsaber in prettily(er), it’s now another classic’s turn, namely the very first Doom from 1993. What does the result look like? To find out, you have to be patient for a few more lines.

At first thought it was an April Fool’s joke

The creation of the modder sulim_t was initially thought by some to be an April Fool’s joke, because the ray-traced version of Doom was released on the day notorious for its fake announcements. Oh, while we’re on the subject: Steam will soon be Europeized – honestly now!

However, this special Doom variant really exists and also receives a lot of praise in the comments below the video. As in most cases with such old games, it is not about real, hardware-based ray tracing like in modern titles, but a software solution that the modder programmed. For this he used the open source port called PrBoom.

What is the result? Enough rambling, let’s finally let actions, uh moving images, speak! In a video you can get your own picture of Doom with ray tracing:

The result can best be described as fascinating describe. On the one hand, the modern feature does not magically make the graphics really good, but on the other hand, it undoubtedly looks better than the original, which was not designed for such techniques at all.

Above all, the numerous light sources now have a much stronger effect on the illumination of the level, which also benefits the textures. If you own the original game and don’t mind some tinkering, you can even use the ray tracing mod download and try.

Are you on the go and want to save data? Then keep the video for home and convince yourself of the result with our image comparison:

The lighting effects in particular are really impressive and visually spice up the game (image source: sulim_t on YouTube)

second hand? On his YouTube-Kanal By the way, sulim_t also uploaded a teaser for Half-Life 1 with raytracing. If you are interested in what came out of it, you can stop by there.

By the way, we carried out a fascinating (and nerve-wracking) experiment some time ago: play like 25 years ago! One of the things we’re trying to do with the technology from back then is to get the original Doom running. That means one thing above all: drama, sweat and tears!

How do you rate the result? Are you interested in old games with modern graphics features, or does it just make you yawn in boredom? Let us know in the comments!
