The Minecraft phenomenon has been with us for over a decade now and neither the number of players nor the enthusiasm of the fans seems to be slowing down in the foreseeable future. One of them has now gone back to the beginnings on Reddit and published a loving remake of the original trailer.
YouTuber Dennis Vareide made it at the time and uploaded it to the video platform on November 15, 2011. Three weeks later, developer Mojang chose the video as the official version 1.0 trailer.
It was released on November 18, 2011 after two and a half years of development and a long alpha and beta phase. In the unprecedented success story of the block sandbox, however, it was just one of many milestones. In an exclusive interview, the developers recently told us how Minecraft intends to remain exciting in 50 years.
Old against new
Let’s start with the trailer, now almost 11 years old, which has amassed a whopping 161 million views and 1.5 million likes on YouTube. It already captures the allure that has always characterized the game, but also its very limited feature set compared to today.
Most of the video takes place in the original forest and meadow biome, as that’s where most players felt at home. Back then, the variety of landscapes was just beginning to find its way into the game.
Only the last beta update before the release of the full version fundamentally revised the biome generation and introduced nine much more extensive landscape types from deserts to swamps to the partially snow-covered taiga.
