News culture This legendary action film starring Bruce Willis grossed 550 million at the box office: it is available for free on TF1+
The great Bruce Willis recently retired for medical reasons. The man who played John McClane in the Die Hard saga has had a prolific career full of roles, each one more iconic than the last. One film in particular conquered the box office when it was released in the late 90s, despite being panned by critics. And it’s available for free on TF1+ for a limited time.
Michael Bay’s disaster film
For some moviegoers, Michael Bay is nothing more than a craftsman of the 7th art, who quickly makes everything explode on the screen. For others, he is a genius of sophisticated planning and breathtaking staging. No offense to cinema purists, Michael Bay’s expertise in film scoring and directing is unmatched in Hollywood. “Bad Boys 2,” “Transformers,” and most recently “Ambulance” are all serenades aimed at cinemas.
In 1998, the American-born director offered the world a disaster film that would go down in cinema history. Despite rave reviews (43% on RottenTomatoes) but a much more receptive audience (73% on RottenTomatoes), Armageddon takes on everything that comes its way. With its comfortable budget of $140 million, it grossed $553.7 million at the box office. This result makes it Michael Bay’s sixth biggest box office success, despite the film being released in the late 20th century.
It must be said that the filmmaker had all the odds on his side. In addition to action star Bruce Willis, two other stars are in development : Ben Affleck was crowned with the surprise success of Will Hunting and Liv Tyler, who would play Arwen Undomiel in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy two years later. The cast is completed by two iconic Hollywood supporting actors: Will Patton and Billy Bob Thornton.
Will the Earth be irreparably destroyed? The worst is to be feared. An asteroid the size of Texas is moving towards the planet at a speed of 35,000 kilometers per hour. To prevent this catastrophe, Dan Truman, director of NASA, orders a team led by Harry Stamper, a great specialist in oil drilling, to land on the asteroid and plant an atomic bomb that will destroy it. – TF1+
