Steam is going through some big changes today, and one change in particular means both paid games and free games that soar up the Steam charts will be successful. When the two were combined, the two categories could have overshadowed each other, but now they’ve been separated for easier browsing.
If you launch Steam right now, you should see a new tab on your store page called “Hot Free”! It will contain the free games, demos, and benchmarking tools that are currently popular on the digital storefront. As for your “New & Popular” tab, it should now be filled with quality games, including some that were originally hidden amid the wave of free content.

This is actually a good thing for Steam and its users for two reasons. First, let’s take a look at the Black Myth: Wukong benchmark demo that’s currently doing pretty well. Previously, it would have taken a spot in Steam’s main “Latest and Popular” tab. But it wasn’t actually a game. It was a test demo so that people could make sure their devices could run the game and see how well they could run it. Now, this benchmark demo still gets a spot in its own tab, but it doesn’t take up space in Steam’s main “Latest and Popular” tab. Practical
Plus, if you’re looking for the hottest new free games on Steam, there’s only one tab to find what you’re looking for. Instead of scrolling through a bunch of new $60 AAA releases, you can get to a specific tab that only offers free experiences. Win-win.
