News culture This Russell Crowe-starring 50% horror film was a surprise hit at the cinema: now it’s a hit on Amazon Prime Video
I am the result of a popular culture that took off in the 90s and established itself as the dominant culture over the decades. Video games, cinema, manga, anime, comics, comics, literature, series… I am eager to learn and explore the ideas available to me, regardless of the media.
SVOD services have the power to revive forgotten films or even give them a second chance. The film we are interested in today was a surprise box office success – the presence of Russell Crowe in the cast helped – and he has not yet said his last word. A good year after its theatrical release, it is exorcising Amazon Prime Video subscribers with a vengeance.
An exorcist who divides but reports
Russell Crowe’s filmography is peppered with brilliance and, shall we say, questionable decisions. The one who was General Maximus Decimus Meridius in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator was also Robin Longstride in the same filmmaker’s Robin Hood…a big qualitative difference that inspires respect. Although his career in Hollywood was rather discreet, The New Zealand actor offers moviegoers a sublime ‘Nanar’ printed on film by Julius Avery in 2023 (Son of a Gun, Overlord) and written by the duo Michael Petroni – Evan Spiliotopoulos. The Vatican Exorcist is a supernatural horror film with roots in the 1990 and 1992 novels An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories by Father Gabriele Amorth.
Directed by an Oscar-winning actor, The Pope’s Exorcist from the original title was a surprise box office success, grossing $77 million on a modest budget of $18 million. However, the press did not agree with Julius Avery’s film (50% positive reviews on RottenTomatoes). While some critics find the film “shamefully entertaining” and call it a “cheesy act of blasphemy,” others find it “the vitality and vivacity of a 15th-century corpse.”
Inspired by the real archives of Father Gabriele Amorth, the Vatican’s chief exorcist. Father Gabriele Amorth investigates the horrific discovery of a possessed boy. His investigation will lead him to uncover an ancient conspiracy that the Vatican is desperately trying to hide. – (Amazon Prime Video)
