A prequel series
Dune prophecy takes place 10,000 years before the events of the Dune films. It is based on the novel “The Sisterhood” by Frank Herbert’s son Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. LThe story follows sisters Valya and Tula Harkonnen, who found the Bene Gesserit sect and fight against the forces that threaten the future of humanity. The series was purchased by HBO in 2019 and was originally going to be called Dune: The Sisterhood. But a lot has changed since then and the road to release on November 18th has been quite a long one. In fact, Dune prophecy had to deal with many line-up changes and sudden departures.
The series, ordered in 2022, began filming in November. But a few months later, one of the main actresses (Shirley Henderson) and the director of the first episodes (Johan Renck) decide to leave the ship. But these weren’t the first departures. In fact, Denis Villeneuve, who was set to direct the pilot, chose not to focus solely on it Dune: Part Two. Let’s also not forget that Diane Ademu-John (“The Haunting of Bly Manor”) turned down the showrunner position, which was eventually given to Alison Schapker (“Fringe”). But that doesn’t mean the series is far from bringing together big names. So we find Emily Watson (Chernobyl), Olivia Williams (The Crown), Mark Strong (Kingsman) and Travis Fimmel (Vikings).
A third film in preparation
The Dune saga is legendary for science fiction fans. For many, Denis Villeneuve’s two productions are already part of the history of world cinema. The Canadian director announced that the third volume would be his final part. He prefers to leave his place to someone else afterwards. Titled Dune: Messiahset to release in 2026, it will offer a 12-year ellipse to discover an older Paul Atréides, still played by Timothée Chalamet. With more than a billion grosses at the global box office for the first two feature films, Dune: Messiah will have no right to fail.
