GTA 5 is Rockstar Games’ biggest success. But it could have been more crowded if players hadn’t voted so heavily for another title…
With almost 200 million copies sold GTA5 is the second best-selling video game of all time. A phenomenal success that Rockstar could well repeat with GTA 6 starting next year. But the bar is still high. The 5th opus breathed new life into the successful license, especially with the possibility of playing three different characters in the same adventure. Add the online mode added to this single-player story – which has now become a story in its own right – and you multiply the hours of play.
However, this Grand Theft Auto V could have been different. Or rather, it could have been even richer. Several echoes have recently pointed this out Rock Star finally abandoned content. After a main character, a former developer speaks up to confirm what we’re missing.
Why was this GTA 5 DLC abandoned?
A few months ago, comedian Steven Ogg made an astonishing statement. The one who plays Trevor in GTA V revealed that a DLC was planned around his character. Today, it is a former developer from Rockstar Games who confirms these words again. In an interview with SanInPlay: Joe Rubino gives new details about this stalled project.
Trevor Phillips, a character of all excesses, has clearly left his mark in GTA 5. We will therefore not be surprised that Rockstar has developed a DLC revolving around him. Rubino explains that at the time, the development teams were split into two teams: one worked on this project, the other on GTAOnline.
However, the latter had a considerable and immediate success. As a result, the single-player DLC was not released. not competitive enough » attract public interest. Red Dead Redemption 2 was also in production at the time, so it was simply stopped without even being finished.
However, we can only say that an expansion would have made it possible to deepen the narrative arc around the unpredictable Trevor even further. According to Rubino’s explanations, this DLC would be a new episode in the life of the protagonist. In addition, we would have visited exclusive locations. As Steven Ogg previously explained, we would have discovered a Trevor like James Bondhas infiltrated a mission for the government.
In short, this cancellation highlights the challenges that development teams face. Financial problems are more than ever determining the direction of the studios. Here, the upstream release of GTA Online will have pulled the rug out from under the DLC. Rockstar then seemed to prefer to focus the teams for this project on RDR2.
Ultimately, it’s the players themselves who, without knowing it, have been missing out on this exclusive adventure for Trevor. If you had played GTAO when it came out, would you have preferred to wait to get your hands on it so you could play the DLC?
