Just a few weeks ago, Square Enix registered a very charming word in Japan. The word is Symbiosis, a word any fan of Eve of Parasite will be very familiar with, considering the term was the basis of the 1995 horror game content.
Of course, fans of Parasite Eve are starting to get excited about the imminent announcement of a remake or even a spinoff of some sort. For those of you holding out hope, I can only say that my heart goes out to you, because of course Square Enix didn’t give fans what they wanted. That said, fans will see something like Tactics Ogre: Reborn on November 11th, which is a big deal I guess.
Instead of announcing a new game or remake, Square Enix went on to reveal that the trademarked term Symbiogenesis is actually the company’s new franchise. A new franchise that calls itself Square Enix’s “Global NFT Collectible Art Project.”
As a new franchise, it seems unlikely that this NFT reveal is just the beginning of the Parasite Eve revival. The fact that it appears to be completely separate does raise the question of why Square Enix would use the name Symbiotic Origins?
Being a fan of Parasite Eve right now definitely feels like gnashing of teeth. I can’t imagine if Konami’s Silent Hill revival is just an NFT project; frankly, I’ll be on my side.
Overall, it sucks to see Square Enix — the publisher behind some of the best games ever made — fall into the realm of blockchain and NFTs, not just games that make players crave .
