A new Loewe fashion show showcased a collection of pixel art outfits that look so similar to the gaming aesthetic we’ve been used to over the years that at first glance, it looks like it’s been photo-manipulated. Yet Look 19 and Look 34 from Loewe’s Spring 2023 collection are very real and exciting.
The fashion show itself is available in a number of different looks, pushing boundaries in all areas of contemporary clothing with garments from JW Anderson’s hands and minds. According to an article on the Vogue Runway website, the show was accompanied by provocative questions about the “fake behind our screens.”
For the pixelated tops and trousers, Anderson describes his work artistically, calling them “this strange hallucination of suddenly breaking patterns.” Indeed, the clothes really seem to jump off the frame, almost on another virtual layer above the model’s background and fleshy features. It’s far more impressive than those kids’ Minecraft creeper t-shirts you see on sale everywhere.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen major fashion brands and fashionistas explore the world of video games. Back in 2019, Louis Vuitton collaborated with League of Legends on a limited-edition digital fashion collection, and Fortnite also collaborated on haute couture with their BALENCIAGA in-game collection.
As you can imagine, the reason is almost certainly money. Not only are gamers getting older and making more money all the time (hopefully), but their kids these days may want some fancy expensive and stylish clothes. As for the pixelated garments shown in Loewe’s spring 2023 collection, there’s no word yet on whether they’ll even go on sale. However, if they do, they’re pretty expensive, so keep that in mind if you’re dying to get one.
