What is Tidal Student?
Tidal Student is the premium version for students. Like many other competitors, the music streaming service offers a discounted individual subscription model for learners. In this way, Tidal speaks directly to one of its main target groups and wants to bind you as early as possible and for the long term.
Features im Tidal Student-Abo
In principle, Tidal Student is the same subscription as Tidal Individual, the variant for individuals. If you book the paid subscription Tidal Student, you get the following features:
- Stream music without ads
- Lossless audio quality up to 24-bit, 192 kHz (kilohertz) with a bit depth of approximately 9216 kbit/s (kilobits per second)
- Large music library with over 110 million songs
- Download music offline and listen offline
- curated and personalized playlists
- and much more
If audio quality and a large selection of music are very important to you, then you should definitely consider Tidal Student. In addition to the selection of playlists, “Tidal Rising” is a feature that is intended to introduce you to new, as yet unknown artists. This is not only good for the artists, but also for you, as there are one or two musical gems hidden there.
When it comes to audio quality, however, you should keep in mind that you cannot play lossless audio formats via a Bluetooth connection. For example, if you listen via Bluetooth in the car, you will receive a message within the Tidal app that the lossless audio quality is being downgraded. In this case, any music will be played in AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) format, a codec similar to MP3 format.
Tidal in the test: From artists for art lovers
Stylish, no-frills music service
Tidal initially stood out largely because of its prominent involvement in the project. The high sound quality should keep customers. You can find out whether this works here.
If you want to enjoy the lossless, very good audio quality to the fullest, it depends on the hardware. For an optimal music experience, you should ideally use high-quality headphones. You can go one step further if you connect the headphones to an audio interface on your desktop PC.
This is how the student discount for Tidal works
How you book the Tidal student version depends on whether you already have a Tidal subscription or not. Depending on the situation, you will then have to carry out one of the following two steps.
- You don’t have a Tidal account yet.
- If you already have a Tidal account, you’ll need to go to “Subscription” in Settings, scroll down and select the student discount.
Who is eligible for the subscription?
If you haven’t had a Tidal subscription yet, you are automatically entitled to a trial month. No matter whether you choose Tidal Student or Tidal Individual. Theoretically, you can choose Tidal Individual first, test the service and then switch to Tidal Student before the trial month ends.
But in order to ultimately be able to use the student subscription, you must meet a few requirements. These include the following conditions:
- You are at least 16 years old.
- You are enrolled at an official university/technical college.
- You can prove that you are enrolled at this university.
If you meet these requirements, you can submit and have your student status checked in just a few steps when booking. But how exactly does it work?
Student Status Verification
Your student status is verified by an external company called SheerID. Verification takes place within Tidal and your data must be identical both on Tidal and on your university documents. To verify yourself, you can submit one of the following documents:
- an official certificate of enrollment
- the timetable for the current semester
- a receipt for your registration or study fees
In addition to your data, the university’s data must of course also be identical to your details. So make sure that you use the correct name of the university when verifying.
If you have successfully verified yourself and received the student discount, it is valid for twelve months. You then have to submit the verification again and prove your student status again. Tidal wants to make sure that you are still authorized to use Tidal Student as a user and that your status has not expired in the meantime.

What may not be much for some can be a very valuable and practical aspect, especially for students. Because in this phase of life, sometimes every euro counts.
Is Tidal’s student package worth it?
The Tidal version for students is worth it for you in many ways. Not only do you save on price, you also get excellent, lossless audio quality as well as additional features that enrich your music experience enormously.
If fair pay for artists is very important to you, then Tidal is also the right place for you. The service attaches great importance to giving its users and artists the appreciation they deserve. Compared to other music streaming services, Tidal ultimately invests the most in artists.
However, if you are looking for a provider that offers a large podcast catalog in addition to music, then Tidal is probably not the right choice for you. In this respect, the competitors for Apple Music and especially Spotify Premium Student are significantly better alternatives.
