“Valerian – The City of a Thousand Planets” by director Luc Besson received rather mixed reviews overall, but was particularly convincing due to the visually stunning sci-fi world. Already in “The Fifth Element” the Frenchman shows that he has a knack for space adventures. But the chemistry between the main actors Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan leaves a little to be desired.
Anyone who sees some parallels to “Star Wars” in the film is not so wrong. “Valerian” is based on the French comic series “Valérian et Laureline” by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières, from which “Star Wars” creator George Lucas is said to have been inspired.
To date, Lucas has not commented on whether he has actually read the comics. But some costumes, like Princess Leia’s slave costume or even the design of the Millennium Falcon, bear strong resemblance to images from the comics.

Valerian and his colleague Laureline work as special agents in the Spatio-Temporal Service in the 28th century. This is an organization that protects humanity from threats from outer space. Commander Arun Filitt believes that Alpha is being consumed by a virus. Valerian and Laureline are supposed to find out what this is all about. But they quickly uncover a dark secret that could threaten the future of the entire galaxy.
