As is well known, Tom Clancy’s The Division is also to be filmed and thus conquer another entertainment area far away from video games. However, the project is currently not under a good star.
With Tom Clancy’s The Division, Ubisoft has delivered a thoroughly successful live service third-person shooter with a post-apocalyptic setting. No wonder that the studio had already announced a film adaptation based on this brand in 2016 – but since then this project has been largely quiet.
At that time it was said that Jake Gyllenhaal should be seen in a leading role. This is known from other films based on video game franchises, for example in “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” from 2010. Jessica Chastain has also been confirmed for the project, as well as a planned start on the streaming service Netflix. The only question that has always remained open is: when is it supposed to be?
The answer to this question should now be: It will take quite a while – because Kelly McCormick, co-founder of the studio responsible, finally had an update ready again in this regard. According to McCormick, the joy was still great when a director was found in 2018 with David Leitch from 87North Productions in a new interview DiscussingFilm
Reason: Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, work on the film adaptation has been on hold for some time and will remain so for an indefinite period. It remains to be seen whether and when the film adaptation of The Division will continue.
According to McCormick, the prospect of a film adaptation of The Division was “really fantastic” because a team of special agents could have done a lot in a devastated city. After the outbreak of the corona virus, this setting felt more and more like a documentary and was “no longer fun”. Telling the story of a virus that spreads fear and terror as it spreads was ultimately too close to reality, which is why the studio initially distanced itself from it in view of the Covid 19 pandemic.
In 2021 there were still considerations to revise the script, but these plans have apparently not progressed further since then. Of course we will keep you informed about the future developments of this project!
