Amazon wants to produce a live-action Tomb Raider series – and a star from “Game of Thrones” could take on the role of Lara Croft.
The Tomb Raider game series is one of the longest-running and most renowned franchises in the industry. Recently, however, the focus has been less on new video games and more on other implementations. Netflix, for example, recently launched an animated series that is already set to be expanded for a second season. And Amazon is also jumping on the bandwagon in this regard.
In contrast to Netflix, however, Amazon is planning a live-action series for Tomb Raider, after there have already been several other live-action adaptations in the form of films. The last such film with Alicia Vikander in the lead role was released in 2018, but she will not play the role of Lara Croft in the Amazon series in the future.
After Amazon secured and commissioned the series in a deal with rights holder Crystal Dynamics in May 2024, the team will be put together in the meantime. The writer and producer will be Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve), but the search for the leading actress is still ongoing. The renowned magazine Deadline now brings some possibilities into play in this regard. According to this, Amazon is looking at Sophie Turner, known from the HBO hit series “Game of Thrones”, and Lucy Boynton as possible Laras. So will we see Sansa Stark as Lara Croft in the future?
Boynton, however, is not quite as well-known as Turner, but has already attracted attention for her roles in the Netflix TV shows “Gypsy” and “The Politician”. She was also seen in the films “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Barbie”.
Not many details are known about the plot of the series. Now that the casting is taking shape and production is starting, more information about this is likely to become public. A release period for the series is now within reach.
