Embracer Group’s takeover of studios like Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics from Square Enix came as a surprise, but could breathe new life into the ranks.
The Embracer Group spent 300 million dollars acquiring various studios from Square Enix. However, this could be an advantage for the players, because while Square Enix has done very little with the brands, the new owner has expressed ambitious plans.
As part of the Embracer Group’s financial report, its CEO Lars Wingefors said quite clearly that he sees “great potential, not only in sequels, but also in remakes, remasters, spinoffs and transmedia projects” for Tomb Raider. It would not be surprising if more happened in this context. Square was relatively “lazy” when it came to the brand, little has happened since Shadow of the Tomb Raider, it was only recently announced that Crystal Dynamics is working on a new part based on Unreal Engine 5, which is now also owned by the Embracer Group .
The same applies to other brands that were taken over by the Embracer Group together with the associated studios. After all, this also includes very well-known brands such as Deus Ex, Thief or Legacy of Kain, which have been on the heap at Square Enix for far too long and have hardly been used and if so, then often with meager results.
Wingfors sees this as confirmed by the fact that the overall response to the takeover is very positive. No wonder, there are enough players who would like well-made sequels to the series and certainly one or the other remake/remaster. It will therefore be interesting to see whether and what will happen in the coming months. It will certainly be some time before more concrete information is available, after all the takeover has to be processed first.
