The Google Pixel 9 Pro will be available in German stores on August 22nd. Netzwelt was able to try out the phone in advance. It turns out that the phone hasn’t learned anything in one area.

The temperature sensor of the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL still cannot be used as a fever thermometer in this country.

The temperature sensor of the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL still cannot be used as a fever thermometer in this country.

With the Pixel 8 Pro, Google introduced a temperature sensor in 2023. This can be used to determine the temperature of objects. To do this, you first have to select the material the object is made of in the app and then hold the sensor a few centimeters away from the object. Since February 2024, the Pixel 8 Pro can also be used as a fever thermometer with the sensor – but only in the USA. If you were hoping that this would change with the Pixel 9 Pro (XL), we have to disappoint you.

The temperature sensor on the new Google phones can still only be used to measure the temperature of objects in Germany. However, this is likely to be due to legal rather than technical reasons. In the USA, the medical benefits of the function have been confirmed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and approval for use has been granted. This approval is apparently still pending in this country. However, it is unclear whether Google has even applied for this approval yet.

Temperature sensor still does not function as a fever thermometer in Germany

Some people are already saying that the temperature sensor will soon be history – similar to the radar chip “Soli” from the Pixel 4. However, this is contradicted by the fact that Google is apparently planning a major update for the thermometer app on the Pixel devices. Telegram-Kanal “Google News” Screenshots were leaked that supposedly show the new version of the app.

It should display a preview image of the camera so that you can see whether you are holding the sensor at the correct distance from the object. You should also be able to quickly select frequently measured objects on the app’s home screen so that you can start measuring more quickly.

Although the temperature sensor has not learned anything, the new design of Google phones offers advantages over its predecessors.

A notice: A detailed review of the Google Pixel 9 (Pro) will follow at the end of the week.
