There is growing evidence that AMD's upcoming graphics card generation, alias Big Navi, could make an enormous leap in performance. The latest leak speaks of a 505 mm² chip, which corresponds to a doubling compared to the Radeon RX 5700 XT.
What exactly does the leak say and how credible is it?
The information comes from user AquariusZi from the forum of the Chinese website PC Shipping (machine translated), which has already proven to be a reliable source in the past. With the new leak he calls three chips:
- N21 505 – Navi 21, High-End, Big Navi, with a chip area of 505 mm²
- N22 340 – Navi 22, probably for the middle segment with 340 mm² chip area
- N23 240 – Navi 23, probably for the entry-level segment with a 240 mm² chip area
What does that mean for performance?
A look at the Radeon RX 5700 XT helps. The previous Navi flagship (Navi 10) with a chip area of 251 mm² and 7 nanometer design has 10.3 billion transistors, 2,560 computing cores and 9.75 TeraFLOPS (TFLOPS FP32).
The RX 5700 XT is also based on AMD's RDNA1 architecture. The upcoming GPU generation will rely on RDNA2. In addition to the expected higher transistor or core count, this should also result in architecture-related performance advantages.

Given that, it's not unrealistic from one Performance doubled on the RX 5700 XT or even going out more. However, these are conjectures based on unconfirmed information and should therefore be used with caution.
Matching rumors
By the way, the speculations about the chip size and a doubling of performance are not entirely new. In December, a forum member of the Taiwanese platform PTT reported on a 505 mm² Navi-21 chip.
In January another rumor spread that predicted 80 compute units or 5,120 cores for Big Navi – a smooth doubling compared to the RX 5700 XT (2,560 cores).
All in all, this results in a thoroughly consistent picture, even if – as already mentioned above – caution is always required with all leaks and rumors.
When should Big Navi appear?
So far, a release of Big Navi alias RX 5950 XT or even RX 6xxx is expected at the end of 2020. Occasionally even October is mentioned as the date for the market launch.
There will be a product presentation at the Computex keynote, which was postponed from early June to 28th to 30th September due to the Corona crisis.
