To say that Top Gun: Maverick had a blast in 2022 would be an understatement. It holds a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and has astoundingly grossed nearly $1.5 billion worldwide, making it one of the longest-running theatrical releases in the post-pandemic era. Of course, Paramount Pictures wanted to continue filming the series, but Tom Cruise’s schedule was a bit of a problem. Now, Twister co-star Glen Powell, who plays a key supporting role in Top Gun, is giving us hope that a third sequel could be coming sooner rather than later.
Earlier this year, Powell did not respond to online rumors that Paramount and Skydance were working on a third sequel, but now (via Variety ), he has changed his tune, seemingly indicating that things are moving quickly.

“I mean, I have a date,” Powell said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with his Twister costar Daisy Edgar-Jones about returning to fighter jets to film Top Gun 3. Whether this means he’s starting physical preparations before filming or going back to pilot school remains to be seen, but it’s worth noting since everyone assumes it’ll be a while before the next Top Gun begins filming. In fact, producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently told everyone to chill out.
“Something interesting will be announced soon…but this is kept secret from me. [Joseph] Kosinski, Cruise and Jerry [Bruckheimer] Always working. There are things coming up and it sounds exciting. I don’t know when I’ll go back… I’m sure there will be a jet waiting for me in the future,” he added. Note that it will take a while for the script to be ready, but the studio will likely start work as soon as it’s happy with the draft. Pre-production and production on Maverick (the latter of which began back in 2018) were particularly difficult, given all the training and preparation required to film the actors inside a real fighter jet and coordinate with the U.S. military.
The expectation for the third sequel is that the younger cast of characters, led by Miles Teller and Powell, will become more important and take some of the narrative weight off Cruise’s shoulders. That being said, the 62-year-old lunatic is expected to stick around for the film. For now, we’re just waiting for him to finish the eighth Mission: Impossible movie, which, despite originally being planned to film back-to-back with last summer’s Dead Reckoning: Part One, hit various roadblocks on its way to the big screen.
