The official trailer for Dune: Part Two
Tim Blake Nelson and Stephen McKinley Henderson were involved as actors in the filming of Dune 2 – and even in important roles. But in the final film there is no trace of them, because director Denis Villeneuve cut out both characters completely.
Not only that: We will never see their scenes because Denis Villeneuve simply doesn’t publish deleted scenes for his films. The sci-fi director describes this as one of the most painful decisions
who he ever had to meet.
Which characters from Dune 2 are exactly about?
Stephen McKinley Henderson was already seen in the first Dune of 2021. The actor appeared in the role of Thufir Hawat as a Mentat (a type of human computer) of House Atreides.
He was actually supposed to return for Dune 2 and, among other things, shot scenes with Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, who played McKinley incredibly fun
designated. Back in August, Henderson revealed Purdue University Podcastthat filming Dune 2 with Butler was one of his personal highlights of the production.
Denis Villeneuve justifies the decision to remove Thufir Hawat from Dune 2 by saying that the story is more dedicated to the Bene Gesserit and less to the Mentats.
It is currently unknown who Tim Blake Nelson played. However, there is speculation that he should have appeared as Count Hasimir Fenring – in the novels, an assassin and advisor to Emperor Shaddam IV (Christopher Walken) and the husband of Lady Margot Fenring (Léa Seydoux).
In an interview with MovieWeb Nelson let it be known that Villeneue’s decision to cut out his role was to him. heart broken
has. Still, there is no bad blood between him and the director and the actor looks forward to working with Villeneuve again at some point.
It’s very possible that Tim Blake Nelson returns for Dune 3, for example, he should actually have played Hasimir Fenring – the character also appears in the direct novel by Frank Herbert Dune: Messiah. Both Stephen McKinley Henderson and Tim Blake Nelson are at least credited in the credits of Dune: Part Two.
We will never see their scenes
If you’re wondering whether the deleted scenes with said actors will ever be released, we have to disappoint you. In an interview with Collider Denis Villeneuve makes it abundantly clear that we will never see the material:
I firmly believe that if it doesn’t end up in the film, it’s dead. Sometimes I take out footage and think to myself I can’t believe I’m cutting this out
I feel like a samurai cutting into his own guts. It hurts anyway, but I can’t go back and create Frankenstein’s monster by reviving something I killed. It’s too painful. If it’s dead, then it’s dead and there’s a reason for that. […]
That’s my job, that’s what it’s about [finalen] Movie. I’m pretty radical when I edit a film. I’m not thinking about my ego, I’m just thinking about the film.
