Ubisoft is starting a new experiment with Quartz, in the context of which they now want to establish blockchain technology in the gaming sector. The first title to make use of this is Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

Ubisoft Quartz is a new platform on which digits can be purchased. These are the first so-called NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) that can be played in an AAA title. In this context, Ubisoft also emphasizes the use of energy-efficient technology, because blockchain technology is basically also known for its high power consumption.

Starting with the beta of Ghost Recon Breakpoint on Ubisoft Connect for PC, Digits will in future be published as part of limited editions, each consisting of a limited number of cosmetic items. In this respect, Ubisoft hopes to create a new way of experiencing cosmetic items in games. With the NFT experience, the gaming settee is intended to “display unique, collectable pieces of the Ubisoft game worlds”. The digits will range from collectible vehicles in the game to weapons and equipment.

Ubisoft specifies the most important features as follows:

  • uniqueness: Each digit is a unique collectible item with an individual serial number that can be seen by others in the game. In addition, current and previous owners are recorded for years, making players an integral part of the game’s story.
  • Playability: Digits are high-quality collectibles in the game with an active utility value. Since they are playable, they offer more than just an item to personalize the experience with, but are a real means of completing missions in style.
  • control: Each digit has a certificate of ownership stored on the blockchain, a decentralized, community-run and Ubisoft-independent technology that gives players greater control than ever before. With digits, items in the game are no longer tied to the players’ inventory, as it is possible to acquire digits from other players outside of the Ubisoft ecosystem.

With the introduction, Ubisoft’s four-year research on blockchain technology culminates. For the use of quartz, the Tezos blockchain is now used, which is based on a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism and should require significantly less energy than proof-of-work blockchains such as Bitcoin or Ethereum.

However, Ubisoft Quartz will initially only be available to players who play Ghost Recon Breakpoint via Ubisoft Connect for Windows PC, have reached at least XP level 5 and are also 18 years old. The beta starts on December 9th at 7:00 p.m. First-time users will initially be rewarded with three free drops on December 9th, 12th and 15th. More such drops are planned for 2022.
