Dead Space Remake isn’t expected until next year, but it’s remembering us with a new trailer and gameplay snippets. We also take stock of the contributions of this version.
When it releases on January 23, 2023, Dead Space Remake needn’t shake up survival horror like it did in 2008, but surpass itself by respecting and enhancing Visceral Games’ vision for the game. It seems very well done!
Dead Space Remake, a survival horror game
Much more than a visual update
Although the series has strayed from its path over the episodes, with a third part less loved due to its strong action leanings, the first part is still remembered. And in that capacity, Dead Space Remake wants to be just as good and even better.
The EA Motive teams made sure to stay absolutely true to the original. When the general content is identical, the visual aspect is radically different. From one scene to another, the title is unrecognizable like the passage where we have to reactivate generators. This time the sets are certainly more detailed – thanks to the latest generation Frosbite Engine – and more elements feed an environmental narrative absent from the original. It is also one of the places that benefit from the flexibility of movement in zero gravity with 360° management, inherited from the two following plants.
But the app will also surprise with a whole system called Intensity Director. Thanks to this, the developers dynamically adjust the visual effects of the environment (light, smoke, etc.). In a decontamination sequence, we feel more of this feeling of being locked in with an enemy that can “disappear” under the effects, to better later ambush us by surprising us. A system that also allows you to change the spawn points of Necromorphs and the way they attack Isaac.
Another modification and last but not least, this remake was intended as a long sequence shot with the removal of loading or camera cutoffs to keep the player stuck to the controller and allow for immersion “unprecedented”
A hero more alive than ever
The story of Dead Space Remake will be the one you know, but with some little twists. First, introducing narrative elements from DS2 and DS3 to deepen the lore from the start. Isaac Clarke also found a voice, that of act or Gunner Wright, who doubled the protagonist in the second and third episodes.
The brand new ALIVE system will translate our hero’s mental and physical state. This program gives us feedback on Isaac’s breathing and heartbeat, and includes dialogue and other spoken sounds. Just running, getting into an uphill battle, or running out of oxygen will have repercussions. In the event of a Jumpscare, the fear will be felt in Isaac’s new voice. A voice that is impaired in three degrees (normal, tired or injured) depending on our survivor’s state of fatigue. Likewise, re-oxygenation will no longer be a “video game” in the sense that Isaac is now catching his breath gradually, rather than instantly.
A bloodier game, an improved sound design
The more blood the better, right? You will be served normally. For now, every shot of your weapons is capable of ripping through the Necromorphs’ flesh, their muscles to ultimately shatter their bones. To see if all of this will really be detectable in the heat of the moment or not.
The soundscape of Dead Space Remake will also enter a new dimension through various technologies or processes such as audio occlusion/obstruction and 3D audio. Specifically, the sounds take into account the hero’s position, obstacles, or types of materials. If you’re standing in front of a metal door with glass on the side, sounds will come through the glass, not the door. The weapons have also been reworked for better sound reproduction. For example, the plasma part of the plasma cutter is more precise than the original.
