Thrills with horror games
In the 1980s, as video games gradually evolved, we started trying to create a horrific and/or scary atmosphere in some of them. Mystery House, The Lurking Horror, Nostromo, Haunted House, Sweet Home… Little by little we’ll move from simple horrifying elements to gameplay and/or a story designed to scare. But it’s not until the ’90s that the horror game will really start to develop and begin to be recognized his first giants with titles like Alone in the Dark (1992) or Resident Evil (1996). The sequel, you know it: hundreds of survival horrors, the emergence of psychological horror that often breaks with action horror, and a genre that is becoming more and more diversified, even trying to reverse horror and have more abstract and conceptual titles . Suffice to say, thrill-seekers have had enough to quench their thirst for a terrifying experience… and it’s not over yet.
During the last summer conferences we had the right to do so announced a lot of horror games, with especially games that mix fear and sci-fi in space. We also recently had news of two iconic franchises that still have several titles in the pipeline: Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Add to this the recent release of games like Signalis or Resident Evil Village Gold Edition, the imminent arrival of The Callisto Protocol and Dead Space Remake, but also Xbox Game Pass that fills its catalog with horror games of all genres and you get enough around your to satisfy cravings for a cold. And if the offer seems particularly rich and highlighted in the last few days, it is of course because Halloween is fast approaching.
Halloween is coming
Halloween is on October 31st! And when they say Halloween, they say horror galore. And why at all? It all started in Ireland where we celebrated the New Year between October 31st and November 1st. Not only was this night dedicated to the god of death, but costumes were also worn to scare away spirits, which are particularly numerous at this time when the nights are long. With the passage of time and the arrival of new people on Irish soil, the custom spread and changed until it became the Halloween we all know today.
