Game News Unreal Engine 5 – Next-gen engine releases real-time demo for PlayStation 5
Geoff Keighley warned us! A big surprise was revealed this Wednesday, May 13 at 5 p.m. It is obviously the Unreal Engine 5, a new game engine that will be used in particular by next-gen productions. What does this new engine have in store for us? Answer in a few lines.
In order to present the new capabilities of Unreal Engine 5, technical director Brian Karis and artistic director of special projects Jerome Platteaux reveal us "Lumen in the Land of Nanite"
Brian Karis and Jerome Platteaux therefore specify that one of the main objectives of the ninth generation of console and more specifically of the Unreal Engine 5 is to offer photorealism similar to CGI productions or even in real life, while allowing developers to create much more easily thanks to the arrival of new technologies. The first is called Nanite and offers to import 3D models from third-party software like ZBrush and to virtualize geometry made up of hundreds of millions or even billions of micropolygons. Obviously, this new tool saves time, and even promises not to lose any quality during the import.
The second technology to be released with Unreal Engine 5 is called Lumen. As the name suggests, Lumen offers dynamic global lighting that reacts in real time to changes in a 3D scene. This tool, like ray tracing, also promises bounces of infinite lights and indirect reflections on the environment. These new technologies are made possible thanks to the increase in the bandwidth of console storage according to the developers of Unreal Engine 5. In other words, thanks to the arrival of SSDs on consoles.
Artists and designers can create more dynamic scenes using Lumen, for example, changing the angle of the sun for the time, turning on a flashlight or making a hole in the ceiling. Indirect lighting will then adapt accordingly.
The Unreal Engine 5 game engine will be available in preview in early 2021 and in full version in late 2021. It will support new generation consoles, but also current generation consoles, PC, Mac and even iOS and Android.
