It’s the perfect template for a film: With Until Dawn, Supermassive Games released a love letter to classic teen slasher films in game form in 2015. As is well known, the material is being made into a film and filming has now started.
Cinematic horror games and thrillers represent a popular niche in the video game segment. Examples include titles from Quantic Dream, with Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human having been huge successes for the studio. Another major developer in this segment is Supermassive Games, which publishes several titles under one umbrella with the series The Dark Pictures.

The studio’s passion was probably sparked by Until Dawn, a declaration of love for classic teen slasher films. So it only made sense to announce that the game would be adapted into a film. As Asad Qizilbash, the head of PlayStation Productions, has now announced, filming has started.
So pre-production is officially over, so we still don’t have any concrete information about the project. All we know is that Peter Stormare will appear once again as Dr. Hill. The film adaptation is intended to capture the original Until Dawn, but tell its own story. That’s probably a sensible approach, after all, the original relies on your decisions influencing the course of the story.
Other roles include Maia Mitchell, Belmont Cameli, Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo and Odessa A’zion. The writer and producer is Gary Dauberman, who has already worked on the series Annabelle and co-wrote both chapters of the It remake. The film will be directed by David F. Sandberg, who has also played this role in Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation.
It might still be a while before the film is finally released. Perhaps the new edition of the game will help to bridge the waiting time. A technically improved version of Until Dawn is due to be released on PlayStation 5 and PC later this year.
