According to the manufacturer, you can already in a few weeks download the update to One UI 5. At least if you are the owner of the current S22 series, because the latest version will only appear for the current flagships. Samsung has not yet announced an exact release date.

Until then, we will clarify the innovations that you can look forward to. Because with the update, Samsung is primarily focusing on personalization. One of the highlights will be the new lock screen customization options, as well as new modes to avoid distractions based on your activity.

As mentioned at the beginning, you will be able to personalize the lock screen more easily and better. Similar to iOS 16, you simply hold down longer and this takes you to the customization menu, which awaits you with many innovations.

Of course, the customization options include the background image, the clock style and pop-ups for your notifications. You can even select a specially created short video for the background.

The Bixby assistant also gets a number of other features with the new update. Among other things, the routine function will be expanded and this now includes further automations according to your situation.

In addition, Bixby now supports a focus mode with the simple name Modes or in Europe Modi. Similar to Apple, you can set custom settings based on your activity and avoid distractions.

One of the most interesting new features is Bixby Text Call. With this new feature, you can take calls and communicate via text. Bixby converts your counterpart’s speech input into text, while the voice assistant in turn outputs your text input into speech.

What is this feature supposed to be useful for, you ask? According to Samsung, the added value should particularly come into play in crowded and noisy environments or when privacy is important to you. It is still unclear whether Bixby Text Call will come to Europey or whether it will support Europe voice output. So far it is available for South Korea and should support English voice output in 2023.

Other innovations in One UI 5

While we’ve covered the main points, there are other minor improvements worth checking out. Widgets can now be placed on the home screen the stack and you can put a number of applications under one widget to save more space on the home screen.

In the future, you can control your connected devices via a central menu. This gives you access to the available functions that are compatible with other devices, such as Quick Share, Smart View or Samsung DeX. Samsung also integrates the option Auto Switch Budswhich allows you to easily switch your headphones to another available device.

Last but not least, the manufacturer provides a security measure when sharing photos with sensitive data. A notification will appear in the Share panel if you accidentally share an image with potentially sensitive information, such as a credit card or driver’s license. However, this feature should also be limited to the Korean and English system languages ​​for the time being.
