Are you excited for Venom: The Last Dance? Well, you might be unhappy to hear that it received less than stellar reviews. On the other hand, they found a great actor to play the main villain Knull, the King in Black.
Via The Hollywood Reporter’s chat with writer-director Kelly Marcel, who took over directing duties after co-writing the previous installments, we learn Andy Serkis officially plays Knullalthough the screen time in his debut may have been a bit limited.

Let’s get the bad news out of the way: Venom 3 didn’t convince many critics… which isn’t surprising, since the first two movies weren’t serious Oscar contenders. Currently, the approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes is 38%, with 69 reviews (not bad). That’s up from Venom’s horrific 30% and down from Venom: Carnage’s (almost fresh) 57%. One recurring complaint seems to be the lack of focus on Venom and Eddie’s unusual relationship, which became somewhat romantic in the second film.
Traditionally, these movies have struggled with serious plots, only becoming endearing when they double down on comedic beats and wacky antics. It sounds like the makers of the trilogy were leaning more towards self-serious stuff, which is a shame. Still, if the Venom series without Spider-Man has been good enough for you so far, you’ll be fine. In fact, it seems like many moviegoers are planning to see it this weekend and before Halloween, as early box office tracking is firmly positive.
Marcel said that the casting of Andy Serkis as Knull, the main villain in The Shadows and symbiote god, was something that happened by default after the actor-director directed his second film: “We all love Andy . We knew he was going to be this in Venom 2 [Knull] The character, were we able to bring that character into this movie. He was the only one we asked and, of course, he was excited. He is one of the greatest voice actors ever. Knull is also motion capture and CGI, so it’s pretty cool [to work together]”.
There are rumors that he will appear again in Sony’s universe or the Marvel universe, and I guess we’ll have a better idea of where this is all going when we watch Venom: The Last Dance. Opens in most areas tomorrow October 25th.
Will another respectable box office hit convince Sony Pictures to keep the Venom craze going? “We were asked to do three, we’ve delivered three, and who knows what the future holds. I hope we’ve laid the groundwork for them in the third movie with other characters, other symbiotes and bad guys that they can run with , should they choose? But this is the last time for Venom and Eddie.” Looking at the chaos Sony Pictures has created with its recent Marvel efforts outside of Venom, we wouldn’t be surprised if they continue.
Without having seen the trilogy, we can also look forward to a crossover between the Marvel Universe and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, which is something we’d love to see in a movie starring Tom Hardy. “Spider-Man 4” will be filming next summer, and we will soon find out officially how the story progresses. Since the multiverse is still wide open, the opportunities are there.
