Maxis had announced the color: The Sims 4 would continue to be supplied with content for some time. But what about the Sims 5? The axe has fallen.
The Sims 4 celebrated its tenth anniversary this year. After more than a decade, it is not ready to disappear from the landscape. Maxis continues to pamper its game with numerous expansions, kits and other free and paid DLCs. Although it is full of life, the next content of the fourth episode ironically focuses on death. Did you see a sign there that would mark the arrival of The Sims 5? We have bad news for you.
You can forget about the Sims 5
10 years, countless DLCs of all kinds… The Sims 4 has not yet managed to keep the community engaged. Maxis has been very transparent, its successor, also known as Project Rene, will not be released for years. Described as the “next generation” of the Sims, the generation has always been surrounded by mystery. We know it will offer more customization tools and put more emphasis on the multiplayer component, but EA has always refused to call it “The Sims 5”. Recently, an employee accidentally revealed that a fifth episode had been canceled and the axe fell. No, The Sims 4 is not going away anytime soon. On the occasion of the franchise’s 25th anniversary, Kate Gorman gave a long interview to Variety.
The license’s general manager then explained that “The Sims 5” is not in development and is not planned for the foreseeable future. The reason? According to her, the approximately 80 million players have invested so much time and money in the fourth installment that it would be complicated to start them over again after a decade. So their stories will remain intact, as “The Sims 4” slowly moves towards being a service game with new updates and continues to be continuously supplied with content.
And Project Rene in all this?
The project is still in development, EA has even announced that new test phases will take place soon, but by invitation only. “Project Rene focuses on creating opportunities for fans to meet, socialize and share while playing together in an entirely new world,” the publisher recalls in its official press release. This is pure speculation, but it seems to be more of a large-scale project to rework the current game than a real Sims 5. The development teams should provide more information in the coming months. In the meantime, you can Register here to test the new features of this project Rene. And long live the Sims 4.
