If you love Virtua Fighter but are tired of having to boot up Yakuza or Like a Dragon to play modern ports of the series, there might be some good news. A Virtua Fighter reboot could be in the works, according to a leaker who has made some accurate predictions in the past.
Now, like all news about leaks, we should take this with a grain of salt. However, if the reason for this VR Fighter leak is MbKKssTBhz5 on Twitter is accurate, then this could mean new life for one of the oldest franchises in the fighting game genre. A game that stands apart from great games like Yakuza: Infinite Fortune.

The leaker elaborated on their claims in a follow-up tweet: “This is a reboot game not developed by RGG Studio. It is developed by the staff of the latest Virtua Fighter game. There is a single-player game for casual gaming and multiplayer elements as well as core players, including competitive players.”
The game has a checkered and strange past. The first game was released in 1993, and the goal of the game was to replicate some real, non-exaggerated martial arts moves in a digital ring. It was a pretty big hit in the arcade and early console eras, but was somewhat lost with 2010’s Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown. 10 years later, a new version of “VR Fighter 5” was released, but it did not cause a huge sensation.
Oddly enough, in the modern era of video games, Virtua Fighter is probably best represented by the arcade games in the Yakuza and Yakuza series. For years, people who played the action (and now turn-based) role-playing game series could walk into an arcade and sit in the cab of a meticulously recreated Virtua Fighter. Is it as good as the new Virtua Fighter game? No, obviously not. But it’s nice to see this, especially for those 30+ VR Fighter fans who still have hope.
The last time Virtua Fighter fans had a glimmer of real hope was when Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown was released in 2020, but its launch was a bit weak as the game suffered from network issues during the height of the coronavirus pandemic. . So a fresh reboot of Virtua Fighter – one that comes with great online infrastructure at a time when fighting games as a whole are growing.
Or maybe this will mark another blow for Virtua Fighter fans to either not exist or be another loser. Who can say, can only hope. Oh, and just in case your hopes are truly astronomical, hoping this is the “super game” SEGA plans to launch in 2026 is a bit far-fetched.
