Baldur’s Gate 3’s next major update, Patch 7, is due in September, bringing the previously announced additional evil ending and the official modding tools. Between now and then, the latter will be undergoing a series of tests, the first of which begins today.
Yes, while Baldur’s Gate 4 won’t be coming from it, Larian still needs to add some DLC-sized additions to its masterpiece. I guess when you’re looking for people to fill out your new studio, you have to do something.

In Community Update 27, Larian provided a ton of new details on exactly what the mod support rollout will look like and what it will look like leading up to Patch 7’s release in September.
“Patch 7 testing is now divided into two phases, the first of which is working closely with a small group of modders in the community,” it reads. “This is our closed alpha phase, and they will be able to help us further develop the modding tools, and experiment with bringing their existing mods to life using our Baldur’s Gate 3 Toolkit.”
The closed beta begins today (June 3rd) and will be followed by “further closed beta tests capped at around 1,000 players, which anyone on PC can sign up for”, Larian announced: “We want you to test the mods you create during the alpha!” It will then work on the feedback it receives to get it ready for a full launch in September.

“In the meantime, we’ve got lots more in store for you, including some Anniversary Deluxe events to reflect on the months since launch,” the studio added. “We’re also continuing to work on an in-game photo mode, cross-platform play, and more fixes coming soon!”
The rest of the community update consists of an FAQ about the modding tool, which specifies, among other things, what the toolkit will provide modders and emphasizes that the most tangible effect of official support through mod.io will be to help update the game and reduce the likelihood of conflicts causing problems for you with your modding.
It also explains that while mod support is launching on PC first, Larian aims to “subsequently expand support to the wider community and various platforms – including Mac players, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles.”
